Admissions Process: Step-by-step guide

Students seeking admission into Toronto Science Academy’s program should begin by completing the online request consultancy form found on the homepage. A TSA counselor will reach out with further information and guide the student through each step of the application process.

Any high school (grade 9-12) or international student may apply for OSSD studies. Students may enroll for academic enrichment, an accelerated program or to finish incomplete coursework. Students who intend to graduate may apply to pursue full-time OSSD studies.

Yes, our motto is “worldwide education” because we welcome students living anywhere in the world.

Students in Canada and abroad are able to earn their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) completely online through Toronto Science Academy. In order to obtain an OSSD, students are required to earn a total of 30 credits including

  • complete 2 credits of online learning,
  • complete the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), or complete Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OLC4O) and
  • complete 40 hours of community service hours.

The OSSLT measures whether students are meeting the minimum standard for literacy across all subjects up to the end of Grade 9. Successful completion of the literacy test is one of the requirements to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. The administration of the OSSLT will take place in October or March every year. Students who pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (code: OLC40) will have met the OSSLT literacy test requirement.

Students will be assigned a TSA counselor who will assist in determining program goals and answer any questions students have during the course registration process. Counselors will remain in contact with students throughout their program courses.

Upon counselor recommendation, students can take a full course load of 6-8 credits per year to meet OSSD requirements, however, the online learning platform provides flexibility in scheduling year-round. Counselors will assist in meeting the needs of each student.

Fully asynchronous, interactive and instructor-lead, students are free to log-in and work on their course materials at their own pace. Courses are designed to take 110 hours to complete and all course assignments, including the final exam, must be completed within 4 months from the start of enrollment. Regular attendance at school is critical for the student’s learning and achievement of course expectations. If a student’s frequent absences from school are jeopardizing their successful completion of a course, school staff will arrange to meet with the student and the parents to explain the potential consequences of the absences.

Students with individualized learning plans excel at TSA! Students work at their own pace without classroom distractions and are provided with a TSA counselor who will assist in meeting student needs and accommodations.

For each course, students will be assigned a certified, highly skilled teacher. Students will have the same teacher throughout the entire course and will be able to communicate with the teacher via the online learning portal.

For each course, teachers will be available to answer questions, provide feedback and grade assessments. Your teacher should be the first person you contact with any questions or concerns you have about the course content. Teachers will meet with students twice a week during office hours or tutoring sessions.

Generally, feedback and grading in the online learning portal takes place within 5 days. Some courses with larger writing components may take up to 7 days. Teachers will clarify course-specific expectations.

No, you may continue to work through your lessons at your own pace, however, we recommend waiting for your teacher’s feedback before submitting more assignments so that you can use content-specific feedback on future coursework.

Students will primarily communicate with teachers through the online learning portal. However, other types of communication such as video conferencing may be arranged upon request at the teacher’s discretion.

Once the teacher enters all grades into the online learning portal, students will be issued a report card. An official copy of the transcript can be requested and sent to you by e-mail or mail (postage fee might apply).

The online learning portal provides customized courses with interactive units, live lectures, “hands-on” activities and real-time feedback. Students can review their assignment, quizzes, exam and final grades with teacher’s feedback in the online learning portal.
